Strength Training for Weight Loss: Why It’s a Game-Changer

How Strength Training Changed My Health Journey (And How It Can Help You Too)

Hey there!

I’m Angelis Oliveira, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned on my health journey, it’s that strength training isn’t just about lifting weights—it’s about lifting yourself up. Today, I’m going to share how strength training completely transformed my health journey and why it could be the game-changer you've been looking for.

From the Inside Out: Strength Training and Mindset

I used to view exercise as a form of punishment. If I didn’t push myself to the limit, I felt like I wasn’t doing enough. I’d hit the gym hard—cardio for hours, intense calorie restriction—but all that did was leave me exhausted, frustrated, and mentally drained.

But everything changed when I started incorporating strength training into my routine. And here’s why it worked:

  1. Metabolism Boost: Strength training isn’t just about building muscle; it also boosts your metabolism. This means you burn more calories throughout the day, even when you're not working out. It’s like giving your body a high-powered engine that keeps running long after your workout is done.

  2. Muscle Over Cardio: While cardio has its place, strength training helps you build lean muscle, and muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does. So the more muscle you have, the more efficient your body becomes at burning fat. It’s a win-win!

  3. Sustainable Results: I used to jump from one fad diet to the next, but nothing worked in the long term. Strength training, though, is about consistency. It’s not about drastic changes—it’s about gradual, sustainable progress. It teaches you patience and resilience.

  4. Mental Health: Strength training became a mental workout as much as a physical one. Every time I lifted, I was pushing past limits I didn’t know I had. It helped me build confidence and a mindset of resilience. The stronger I got physically, the stronger I felt mentally, and that made all the difference.

Getting Started with Strength Training: Tips for Beginners

If you’re new to strength training, it can feel intimidating at first. But trust me, anyone can do it! Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Start Small: Don’t worry about lifting heavy right away. Start with bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups. Once you feel comfortable, you can gradually add weights.

  • Form Over Weight: Proper form is key to preventing injuries and getting the most out of your workout. If you're not sure about your form, consider working with a personal trainer (I can’t recommend this enough). They’ll help guide you through the movements and ensure you're doing them correctly.

  • Consistency is Key: Like with anything, consistency is the secret ingredient. Try to fit in at least two or three strength training sessions a week. Over time, you’ll see the results!

  • Progress, Not Perfection: Remember, this is about progress, not perfection. You’re building strength, both physically and mentally. Don’t compare yourself to others—focus on your own journey.

Why You Might Want a Trainer

Having a trainer by your side can make all the difference. Here’s why:

  • Expert Guidance: A trainer can help you develop a routine that’s tailored to your goals. They’ll show you which exercises are best for fat loss, muscle building, and overall strength.

  • Motivation & Accountability: It’s easy to let excuses take over, but a trainer can help keep you accountable. Having someone to cheer you on can be the extra push you need on those days you’re feeling less than motivated.

  • Safety First: If you’re lifting weights, safety is key! A trainer will make sure you’re lifting safely and with proper form, so you don’t hurt yourself and can continue progressing.

A Healthier You, Inside and Out

For me, strength training wasn’t just about getting physically stronger—it was about becoming the type of person who shows up for themselves. It’s about loving yourself to health and seeing exercise as an opportunity to honor your body rather than punish it.

Remember: There’s no “one-size-fits-all” when it comes to fitness. The best thing you can do is experiment and find what works for you. Maybe it’s strength training, or maybe it’s something else—but as long as you’re taking that next step, you’re already ahead of where you were yesterday.

I’ve seen firsthand how strength training can change your health journey—physically, mentally, and emotionally—and I’m here to tell you: You’ve got this. And I’m right here to support you every step of the way.
